WHAT IS VBAC?
VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. It is the name given to a vaginal birth after a woman has had one or more cesareans.
WHY VBAC CLASSES?
I focus on VBAC childbirth classes for several reasons. In 2012 in Tennessee, the cesarean rate was 35.7%. While cesareans can be necessary and life-saving, in many situations they are not necessary. Since these women have already had one birth, the class is tailored much differently including a focus on processing previous births.
But isn't it 'Once a Cesarean, Always a Cesarean?'
Nope! While that used to be the case when the incision was vertical, the majority of cesarean surgeries now use a low transverse incision along the pubic line. This makes most women great candidates for a VBAC. Please find a supportive provider and discuss your risk factors and potential.
